Lello's bookstore, no doubt, can be called the most unusual and famous shop in Portugal. In addition, it is among the top ten bookstores in the world, and its history began back in 1894
Just then Jose Pinto de Souza Lello became the head of the store called Chardron, whose main task was publishing business and editing books. However, the old boutique building no longer met all the requirements of the owners. It was then that the decision was made to build a new bookshop in Carmelitas Street
Lello was opened in 1906 . This gothic building with elements of Art Nouveau immediately catches your eye, you just can not miss it . The project of the store commissioned by the Lello family was carried out by Javier Estevez . Until now, boutique owners are very sensitive to their offspring . And this is not surprising, because now the Lello store is considered one of the main attractions of Porto and belongs to the national number Monuments . The store has been restored several times over the whole period of its existence, but nevertheless its original form has been preserved .
Lello's bookstore comes as a museum. Even if you do not plan to buy anything, you still have to look. When you open the entrance doors, it seems that you get into another world. Fabulous and unusual. Huge windows, stained glass, glass shelves and a spiral staircase - the interior details are mesmerizing.
The red steps of the luxurious staircase and carved rails lead visitors to the second floor. Here you can read a book you like and try a delicious coffee or a glass of wine. Silence and tranquility are guaranteed - in the coffee shop there are only four tables. In addition, it is from here that you can see a wonderful view of the whole store and you can clearly see the glass stained glass roof. It is decorated with the motto of the Lello family: "The meaning is in labor."
Keep in mind that photography is prohibited in the store.
In Lello's store there is an amazing feature - own "tram line". It is used only when necessary - employees transport large quantities of books to the store departments
