With the coming of the new year residents of the Latvian capital are waiting for big changes : firstly, EUR will be introduced as the home currency in the country, and secondly, the cost of travel in urban transport is noticeably more expensive.

Starting from January 1, one-time travel on the Riga buses, trams and trolleybuses will be:

  • 60 euro cents for local residents;
  • 1 EUR and 20 euro cents for the guests of the city.

Local officials explain such a big difference in tariffs with the desire to increase the number of officially registered residents of Riga, which in turn will lead to an increase in tax revenues to the city treasury.

Let's remind that Latvia will become the eighteenth full participant the eurozone and the second - from among the countries from the post-Soviet space (Estonia became the "debutant" of the EUR zone from the USSR in 2011.
