The perfume festival in Taiwan is held during the seventh lunar month and has both Buddhist and Taoist roots. Local residents of Taiwan honor the spirits of the deceased with folklore performances, offerings, parades and rituals. The most important celebrations take place in Keelung.

It is believed that on the first day of the Festival of Spirits the gates of the underworld are opened to release the souls of deceased friends, relatives and enemies to our world.

People are making every effort to meet the deceased: they arrange lavish feasts , organize opera performances to entertain spirits, burn paper money to make them happy, and try to be loud and noisy, so as not to anger guests from that world during their brief stay on earth. With the flow of rivers, lanterns are lighted to appease the souls of drowned people

The festival will last until September 16.
