Directly from the Capitol you will enter the largest national Library of the USA through the underground gallery .
This library has a rather rich history. The library was opened in 1800 on the territory of the Capitol, and for the first time only the president, vice president, senators and members of the US Congress had access to it. In 1851, during a fire organized by the British, much of the collection of books of the third president, Thomas Jefferson, was burnt. Later, the library was built opposite the Capitol and began to fill it again.
In 1870, a decree was issued that one copy of each book published in the United States must be available in the Library of Congress. Every year the collection was increased by the efforts of presidents and heads of the library fund. To date, the Library of Congress has more than 140 million so-called storage units: books, newspapers, magazines, brochures, manuscripts, publications, audio and video materials, photographs and maps. Every year, the collection receives about a couple million such materials
The Library of Congress has its own website, where you can find a complete list of the publications it contains. Also in the building there are consolidated catalogs containing the account of all books and other materials. You will have the opportunity to find a volume of your favorite author on the lists and sit comfortably in one of the 18 reading rooms of the library
