This museum, founded in 1898 ., on the bicentennial anniversary of the founding of the city, deserves all attention . Its collections hold more than seven thousand . exhibits, among which there are original masterpieces . The building itself, which occupies the museum, can be considered a work of art: it was built in 1870 ., later it was inhabited by the mayor, and then - the merchant Khandrin, after whom the house got its name . The only The disadvantage of this beautiful mansion is m, that its walls can be exposed at the same time not more than one tenth of the rich museum collection .
its birth to the museum is obliged to two outstanding Russians: the writer Anton Chekhov and artist Ilya Repin. At the request of the first Repin petitioned to transfer to the city museum a collection of paintings by Russian artists. Petersburg Academy agreed to give Taganrog eight paintings, from which the history of the museum collection began.
Originally the art gallery was only a part of the Taganrog Museum of Local Lore. But in 1968 it was segregated, making it a separate museum. Eight years later the museum opened its doors in a remarkable building, which it occupies to this day. The Taganrog Picture Gallery received its current name in 2003; and in the same year about fifty amazing works from its funds were brought to Moscow to be exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery
The museum exhibits include icons, paintings, drawings, sculptures and decorative objects, applied arts. The core of the collection and its main pride are paintings of Russian painters of the 18-20th centuries. These are amazing works of such recognized classics as Aivazovsky, Rokotov, Savrasov, Tropinin, Surikov, Repin, Levitan, Korovin, Vasily Vereshchagin. But modern art is also not overlooked; the same applies to the work of local artists.
Separately in the museum exhibited sculptures . More precisely not in the museum itself, but in the open air, in the courtyard . This exposition, established in 1976 ., is called "Museum in the open air", which exactly corresponds to reality . A lot of sculptures from here was transferred from the Old Taganrog cemetery, which was famous for its beauty, but by the middle of the 20th century it finally fell into disrepair . Here you can also see amazing examples of Italian statues, art sculptures and tombstones . Together with the architectural ensemble of a manor t ritory in the mansion all in general looks very harmonious .
The museum regularly passes through the whole year entertaining and cognitive programs for children, during which small visitors learn more about classical art, the history of Taganrog and Russia, and also can try their hand at practice in creative assignments.
