The largest temple in the Leningrad Region - the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary - was built in Gatchina from 1895 to 1914. The authors of the creation of the Orthodox Church sought to implement the idea of the resurrection of the primordially Russian style. However, the project was changed several times by architect L. Kharlamov and engineer A. Baryshkin, as a result they managed to realize only a small part of the plans.
The decoration of the Intercession Cathedral in Gatchina was never completed due to the outbreak of World War I and the October Revolution. Therefore, for many years the facade of the majestic building remained brick, only in 2011 it was plastered. Until then, the red walls were adjacent to the snow-white bell tower and the blue domes.
In the 1930s the temple was put under storage, and worship services were resumed only in 1991. In 1996, the lower church in the name of St. John of Kronstadt was built in the basement of the Intercession Cathedral.
