Day of the polar bear in Spitsbergen

On February 27 the Polar Bear Day is celebrated all over the world. This holiday has appeared thanks to organization Polar Bears International with the purpose to draw attention of the public to protection of polar bears. Many animals serve as indicators of the state of the environment. For example, polar bears remind us of the dangers of climate change.

A polar bear has no natural enemies. The greatest danger to them is the melting of ice as a result of global warming. Bears spend most of their life on ice, where they hunt for seals. Melting ice means reducing the amount of food and reducing the population of bears.

The day of the polar bear is timed to the beginning of spring, when the bear with three month old cubs are selected from their winter lair. Environmental organizations hope that if we start taking measures to reduce emissions to the atmosphere right now, the house of polar bears can be saved.

You can see the owners of the Arctic in their natural habitat during expedition cruises to Svalbard, which take place from June to October on a luxury vessel Sea Spirit, an Ortelius expedition vessel or a Norderliht ship, and a cruise liner MS BREMEN
