Add a review of the Frascati Theater in Amsterdam

Theater Frascati is one of those theaters in Amsterdam, where tourists from Russia are rarely visited. Partly this is due to the orientation of the theater primarily to the local audience, in part to the relatively weak interest of Russian tourists towards the modern theater and contemporary European drama, and in part to the little-known theater in Russia. But in Holland this theater is very popular - it was started by many successful European actors, dancers and directors.

This theater is unusual by several criteria. First, he has as many as 3 scenic stages. The second - one of these sites is entirely given to beginners. The third is that there are very few classical works in his program, almost modern ones. The fourth part of the works is not just modern, it's ultra-modern, some plays at the time of the local premiere have not yet come out in all countries in the form of a book (by the way, it often happens with Russia.)

Most of the plays here are modernist staging on contemporary themes

Venues

At Frascati Theater 3 venues

The main and oldest of them is called Frascati Nes. There are 3 rooms here, and the building was built in 1824, and as an extension to a much older "coffee house." In Britain, from such "coffee houses" were born gentlemen's clubs, and here - the theater. In this theater there is a permanent troupe, but it accepts many guest performers and "invited participants", so in the program - both their own productions and imported ones. There are performances, ballet, show, sometimes classic, but modern drama and modern dances predominate.

Most of the plays here are modernist theses on contemporary themes. Ballets are usually also innovative, with non-classical choreography. In addition, there are a lot of shows, different (but predominantly theatrical and ballet) and a lot of guest appearances - both theatrical companies in Amsterdam and foreign ones (often very serious).

The second site - the so-called Frascati WG (Wilhelmina Gasthuisterrein) , here 1 hall and several studios, all entirely given to young, talented, but still little known performers. Beginners directors, actors, dancers and choreographers - they all perform here. The third site is located in the Flemish Cultural Center (Vlaams Cultuurhuis deBrakke Grond). This is not a very big studio, mostly young performers perform here and small concerts take place. Also this site welcomes all forms of scenic experiment - this is one of the most eccentric studios in the city.

The level at Frascati Theater is high, so do not be afraid to define "little-known performers" - in couple of years they will be spoken about by everyone.

Features

When planning the visit, it should be taken into account that this theater loves all forms of theatrical innovation, that is why the performances and ballets may look rather peculiar in them, so it is better for a conservative person to choose some other theater. The works here are often on the European acute social theme, usually they are in English or Dutch.

Serious and bright theater, but it's worthwhile to go here only if you like modern productions. Well, or if you want to see what the Dutch are watching,

Practical Information

If you go to Frascati Nes, you can also see a beautiful old building and historical halls - those the most that have been attached to the "coffee house". There are not many tourists here. Addresses at this theater 3 - by the number of sites. The main one is Amsterdam, Nes, 63, Frascati WG - Amsterdam, M.v.B. Bastiaansestraat, 54, studio - Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, Nes, 45.

Unlike many other Dutch theaters, Frascati is democratic in terms of prices. The average ticket price is 15 EUR (for the winter of 2015), but there are tickets and much cheaper, especially in the studio, but tour performances and classics are usually more expensive. Tickets in advance are worth buying only for imported serious productions, the rest of them without any problems can be purchased on the day of the performance or a couple of days before it. It is most convenient to do this in the main ticket office, it works 5 days a week - from Tuesday to Saturday.
