Petra, often referred to as the "eighth wonder of the ancient world," is the main treasure and the most popular tourist attraction in Jordan. This unique city was cut right in the rocks by an industrious Arab tribe that settled here over 2000 years ago and turned this place into an important trade center at the intersection of trade routes for carrying silk, spices and other goods.
In ancient times this city had a very great importance, but after the XIV century Peter "lost" and completely disappeared from the field of view of the Western world. Only in 1812 it was reopened by the Swiss traveler Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. He managed to penetrate the carefully guarded ancient city in the guise of an Arab from India who wants to make an offering at the grave of the prophet Aaron
It was thanks to Burkhardt that the mysterious pink and red city opened its greatness to the world and for 200 years attracted tourists from all corners of the earth . Throughout the year 2012 across Jordan there will be a lot of various cultural events celebrating this mysterious Nabataean town carved into the rocks and accidentally forgotten for centuries.
