Fondaco dei Turchi - the name of the building where this museum is located. It is one of the ancient buildings of the city, erected in the 13th century. Initially, it belonged to a rich merchant family, then there was a warehouse. The idea to organize a museum of natural history in an empty building arose in 1923: it was planned to combine existing scientific collections from the city museum and the collection of private individuals. Since then the exposition has been constantly being supplemented.
Several rooms are dedicated to ancient flora and fauna. There you can see unique zoological collections, including skeletons and stuffed fish, animals, insects and birds. The plant world is represented by rare herbaria. It should be noted, for example, the richest collection of insects, minerals and fossils. The department of marine fauna is interesting, a wide assortment of objects contain halls of ethnography. At the museum there is a library where you can find scientific publications.
The pride of the museum is an exposition devoted to dinosaurs. Despite the fact that some of the exhibits are about 50 million years old, they are perfectly preserved. Especially fascinating by its appearance is a seven-meter skeleton of uranosaur, found in Africa in 1973
A significant part of the museum is devoted to the regional studies of the Adriatic. Another of his "chips" - a huge aquarium, where almost all species of invertebrates and fish of these edges are collected, extremely accurately recreating the local ecosystem. Still it is possible to look at representatives of an animal and flora, including already disappeared kinds. The ethnography hall tells about the culture and life of local residents
