Peggy Guggenheim, a billionaire from New York, in 1949 bought an unfinished palazzo and arranged a salon in it, soon expanded into a museum of contemporary art. Peggy herself stayed in Venice until her death in 1979 and is buried here in the garden (along with her favorite dogs). The permanent exposition of the museum includes the works of Picasso, Brancusi, Kandinsky, Miro, Klee and Dali. Curious temporary exhibitions are held here regularly
The Venetian Museum (one of four that belongs to the foundation) collects the works of famous Cubists and Futurists, abstract expressionists and surrealists: Leger, Mondrian, Miro, Dali, Picasso, Magritte and Modigliani. And also paintings by Max Ernst, a famous German artist and "concurrently" - the third husband Peggy Guggenheim. Today the museum hosts exhibitions of artists of the 21st century. Part of the permanent collection is traditionally located in the garden.
In one of its corners, by the way, remains the legendary owner of the palazzo. Next to her tombstone, you can see a sign with the names of her 14 favorite dogs of the Lhasa Apso breed
