Add a review of the Saint-Remy Basilica

This church is one of the three church buildings in Reims, included by UNESCO on the World Heritage List . The present Basilica of St. . Remiglia has come to us from the 11th century, and the grave of the saint who is inside, still serves as a pilgrimage site for believing Catholics . Bishop Remiglia died in 533 g . and was buried outside the city in a small chapel, but the huge popularity of the saint caused a wave of worship and the chapel had to be increased . First the mention of the basilica dates back to the 570th and yy .when the relics of the saint were solemnly transferred . In 760 g . around the chapel appeared the Benedictine abbey, which grew rapidly, and the new church of the monastery was consecrated in the middle of the 9th century . But the development continued, the order flourished, and at the beginning of the second the then rector started building a new, large church .

In the high windows of the choirs one can see a lot of stained glass, and on a sunny day the light seems to pervade the basilica through.

Afterwards the church was rebuilt, destroyed and rebuilt many times. During the revolution, it was ruined, the interior was destroyed, although ancient stained-glass windows have been preserved. Then in the First World War, the basilica suffered greatly from German artillery. More than 40 years it took to restore the basilica, what happened by 1958

For public visits, the former abbey building, now the Saint-Remy Museum, is openly public. In the Museum you can see 16th-century tapestries, marble capitals of the 4th century BC. e., weapons and glass products of the 6th-8th centuries, medieval sculptures and other interesting historical artifacts.

This church does not at all compete with Notre-Dame de Reims for the number of sculptures: there are very few of them here . At the main the facade stands the statue of St. . Petra as a sign of the Roman Catholic Church and St. . Remiglia . Inside the most important sculpture can be considered a statue of the Mother of God surrounded by prophets and apostles . The main window of the gallery is adorned with a large sculpted crucifixion . Altar from red marble was transported to bases or at the beginning of the 19th century from the old Franciscan chapel; many other interior items were also moved here from other closed churches, which in some way compensated for the lost church property in the revolutionary years .

Saint-Remy Basilica in Reims

In the interior of the basilica, the emphasis is on the light. In the center of the nave, a giant chandelier was placed - unfortunately, this is just a copy of the one that was destroyed during the revolution. In the high windows of the choirs, you can see a lot of stained glass, and on a sunny day the light seems to pervade the basilica through.

Tomb of Sts. Remy is a Renaissance crypt erected in the middle of the 19th century. He replaced the former monument, destroyed by the revolutionaries, but in its decoration used preserved from the first statue of the statue. The relics of the saint are placed in a bronze gilded carcass, finished with enamel. Annually this cancer takes place solemnly around the cathedral on the day of the commemoration of the saint
