The Velomu Municipality 2014 Award, annually awarded in Finland for the development of bicycle transport, went to the current times to the city of Joensuu, located in the east of the country

As the portal fontanka.fi notes, the prize was awarded to Joensuu for an innovative approach in promoting the bicycle as the most environmentally friendly means of transportation. The efficiency of the implemented program is clearly confirmed by the results: today in the city the share of bicycle transport is 18%, while the number of bicycle trips across the country does not exceed 8%.

Joensuu does not intend to stop on the reached: until the end of 2014 the local administration will invest in bicycle infrastructure is about 3, 5 million EUR. The main novelty will be a new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians only
