Pyramids in Abu Simbel

During the Abu Simbel festival, crowds of people fill the temple at dawn to see how the rays of light will creep through the stone, illuminating the statues of Ramses and Amon Ra. This spectacle can be observed twice a year, in February and October.

Such was the whim of Ramses II who wished the temple to be built in such a way that the sun entered the holy of holies once on the anniversary of his accession to the throne, and once for his birthday. Impressive is that the holy of holies only lights up, while the charter of Ptah (the god of darkness) remains in the shadows

When the Aswan dam forced Lake Nasser to rise and flood the areas in the early 1960s, the entire temple was moved to a higher place and for this reason the Sun now illuminates the temple a day later than Ramses originally planned.
