The Obvodny Canal was built primarily as an attempt to protect the city from the constant threat of flooding. With his help, the Neva waters should be removed from St. Petersburg when the water level rose to a critical level. Another reason for the construction of the canal was the need for the way for cargo ships that were sent to industrial companies located on the outskirts, so as not to interfere with residents and not pollute the air.
Although the Obvodny Canal had bad reputation without it. Since the time of Peter the Great, in the forests where the canal was built, various incidents of incidents were constantly occurring and local residents tried to avoid this place. And in the 20s of the last century, according to the unconfirmed theory of the psychiatrist Efimson, the city authorities inadvertently awakened the fallen evil forces for centuries.
In 1923, workers laying heat on the heat station stumbled upon a strange structure - circumferential granite slabs with incomprehensible inscriptions. An archaeologist came to the place of finding the find, who was delighted with it - he was convinced that these plates were actually Scandinavian graves dating back to the 11th-12th centuries. The others, however, did not share his enthusiasm - the slabs were taken to a stone-cutting artel where they turned into curbs, and the remains were put in sacks and sent to a dump.
In 1924 St. Petersburg suicides once again cooled to the Obvodny Canal - until 1933, and then in 1943. After the second wave of suicides, the psychiatrist began to spend all his free time in the archives, until he finally found a reference to the event that seemed to him the solution of what had happened. The reason for this, he found the curse, imposed in the 13th century on the Swedish conquerors, prevented the coven of the Karelian sorcerers. However, it is likely that this is just one of the city's legends, which has gained a special popularity among the city's residents.
