Add a review about Pavlo-Obnorsky Monastery

Holy Trinity Pavlo-Obnorsky Monastery - a monastery, which was founded in 1414 on the Nurme River by the pupil of Sergius of Radonezh Pavel Obnorsky. According to legend, for three years Paul lived in the hollow of a linden tree. A part of this tree was kept for a long time in the refectory of the church of St. Paul. Today it is the oldest and largest monastery of the Russian North, located on the territory of the present Vologda region.

In times of Soviet power the monastery was used as an orphanage and a pioneer camp, and was later returned to the church. But the Trinity Cathedral, which was on its territory and destroyed in 1936, has not yet been restored.

The most ancient icons are collected in the monastery, especially the works of Dionysius, one of the most famous Russian icon painters. These works are almost 500 years old. The relics of the miracle worker Pavel Obnorsky are also stored here

The most famous visitors of the monastery were Vasily III and Ivan the Terrible

Temples of the monastery

The Assumption Church is the second stone temple of the monastery after the destroyed Holy Trinity Cathedral; erected for 50 years. The church in the name of Pavel Obnorsky, built around 1546, where the relics of the miracle-worker Pavel Obnorsky were kept. Subsequently, this church, as well as the church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, were dismantled and in their place was erected a one-domed church in the name of the Korsun Mother of God. Alas, this temple was blown up in the 1930s. In the 2000s, a wooden chapel was placed here, in which there is a canopy over the resting place of the relics of the Monk Paul of Obnorsky.

The three-story Rector's chambers that adjoin the Dormition church are noteworthy. The two lower floors date back to the 16th century
