Some say that the Hermitage Garden is the most resting place in Moscow, while others say it is an atypical place for the capital. The garden is amazing in that three theaters, a platform, a fountain, a children's playground, squirrels, pheasants, pigeons, flowers, trees, arbours fit in a small territory.
Hermitage Garden was not always the way we are now. He was even in a different place. From 1830 and almost until the end of the 19th century, it was located on Bozhedomka and was the first entertainment garden in Moscow, with gazebos, flower beds, theater, stage, coffee shops and pavilions. Tsvel in all senses, the Hermitage, when he belonged to the former actor of the Maly Theater Lentovsky. On the beach and water, ballets were staged, gypsy choirs performed, military bands, Russian songbooks.
When Lentovsky went bankrupt, the garden came to desolation. The territory was built up by houses. But the new garden "The Hermitage" appeared in the carriage series. In 1984, the site of the former estate of the merchant Olontsov passed into the possession of the Moscow merchant Shchukin, in just one year he turned a vacant lot into a flower garden, broke flower beds, planted trees, reconstructed the theater building. And on June 18, 1895, the official opening of the garden took place. In the same year, the Hermitage got electricity, running water, and a swimming pool.
After the revolution, the garden was first nationalized, during the NEP was transferred to private rent. During the war it was temporarily closed. In 1943 performances were resumed, artists rehearsed and played in an unheated building, but the Hermitage lived. In the fifties and sixties of the last century, chess was played in the garden, people were walking, reading, listening to famous artists, watching movies (in 1953 a screen was installed for the summer cinema).
In 1991 the theater" New Opera "was opened, and today there are three in the garden - plus" Hermitage "and" Sphere ". In the winter, the garden turns into the most romantic ice rink in Moscow, and in the warm season all kinds of festivals are held here - jazz, ethna, Latin American music, humorous, gastronomic, wine, beer, exhibitions. There is a tea house in the garden.
