If you never had the knitting skills to knit the nets or repair the nets, and you always passionately dreamed of becoming a fisherman - then you need to get acquainted with the life of a small fishing village. Many years ago Jurmala was not like a resort: there was only a small village of fishermen - a classic in the face of boats and huts pulled ashore, where they smoked fish. The fish were then sold with pleasure on the market without any problems: after all, something other than fishing, near the sea did not trade.
In 1970 the authorities announced the creation of such a museum in Jurmala , and the next nine years, they brought from all over Latvia fishing houses. A collection of fishing hooks, nets, boats, smokehouses for fish, baths, anchors, everything that could be found in the house - was placed on the territory of the museum. There was even a hut where the nets, carriages and barns were stacked.
But the visit to the fishing village would be incomplete without a group excursion, where everyone will be shown how to twist the ropes, create sea knots - from brimstone to surgical, teach how to repair the nets, so that there are no problems on the fishing trip. You will be offered to try smoked fish, drink beer and listen to Latvian folk songs
Curiously, all the items on the territory of the Jurmala open-air museum are unique, real, formerly in use at the time for coastal fishermen. There are no reconstructions: the houses brought here from all over Latvia were delivered entirely and took their place in the park. You can visit the museum free of charge: there is such a possibility on Tuesdays
Working hours: Tuesday - Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.
Admission fee: 0, 70-1, 4 EUR.
