Practically undressed men carrying cakiyamakas (special Japanese platforms) participate in the race through the streets of Fukuoka during the Hakata festival Gion Yamakasa. Each kakiyamaka is richly decorated and reflects elements of traditional Japanese life, and a doll is placed in the center.

The race is the culmination of a two-week festival, which takes place from 1 to 15 July. During this time, teams from different regions must build richly decorated cakyamakas weighing about a ton each. Teams competed with each other for centuries, and the spirit of rivalry is very strong.

The drum roll fills the streets, people are rooting for the teams, and the kakiyaks pass by them . "Horsemen" on kakiyamakas, in traditional clothes, you can see , as well as runners in loincloths . The latter are more like one solid naked mass, which is the base of the platform, which only does that flashes with its feet . The race begins every day at dawn, and although this is the best time of day in Fukuoka , in summer there is very hot so that the race track is added to the waterways so that the competitors can cool down during the race . In addition, it adds entertainment to the competitions .

On the night before the race its participants come to the sacred lantern of the Shushtoi temple of Kushida to express their reverence and pray for victory
