Parma is the administrative center of the Italian province of Emilia-Romagna, located north-west of Bologna.

Rich in its food industry, Parma is the ideal image of a provincial wealthy city. Well-dressed locals can be seen riding bicycles through city streets or vacationers in elegant cafes. Well-kept monuments adorn the picturesque cobblestone streets. Luxurious architecture distracts from the temptation of delicious Parma dishes.

The city is famous for the production of ham and cheese, as well as its beautiful architecture and surroundings. One of the oldest higher education institutions in the world - Parma University - was founded here.
Parma is divided into two parts by the same river. The Etruscan name of the city was adapted by the Romans to describe the round board of the "Parma"

A bit of history

Being originally Etruscan, Parma became more significant as a Roman colony on the Via Emilia road. After the fall of Rome, the city was occupied by militant Goths, then Lombards and, finally, Franks.

In the 11th century, Parma, together with the Holy Roman Empire, fought against the papacy. In subsequent centuries, the city passed one after another to the Visconti family, then to Sforza, then to the French, and - sweet revenge - Parma fell under the power of the pope.

The Farnese family under the aegis of the papacy ruled Parma from 1545 to 1731, later the Bourbons took over it power, thus proclaiming the time of peace and fanatical cultural activity. During Napoleon's invasions into northern Italy in the early 18th century, a period of instability began in Parma, which ended only with the unification of Italy. 60 years later barricades grew in the city, because Parma was the only place opposed to the disgraceful march to Rome by the adherents of Mussolini in 1922.

Cuisine and restaurants of Parma

If s Parma, your journey is not over yet, as long as you do not try at least a piece of cheese of the same name - parmedzhano Reggiano (Parmigiano-Reggiano). Known around the world, cheese owes its quality to its ingredients. Cows that give milk are grazed only in pastures around the city. Cheese is made and "ripens" for 18-30 months.

Another thing you should try in Parma is the local ham of Prosciutto di Parma. Meat is prepared and aged at a special temperature and humidity for 10 months. As a result, a salty-sweet piece of meat is obtained, which can be eaten separately or as part of other local dishes.

Once it's about meat, Coulatello is the king among them. Unfortunately, the state regulation of the production of the kulatello led him to almost complete extinction. True, there are still rogue manufacturers who cook meat in their basements. Coulatello differs from prosciutto in that it is made from fillet cut from ham, as opposed to a whole piece (prosciutto). If you managed to get a little ham of the coupler, try it! Since it is almost impossible to get it, and if it is possible, it costs about 40 EUR per pound

Parma Baptistery

Parma's entertainment, excursions and attractions

The Glauco Lombardi Museum is especially interesting and well equipped, telling about the life of the second the wife of Napoleon Marie-Louise, the Duchess of Parma. The museum is of a little personal character and attracts many talented and educated empresses to it ....

It is worth to go to Piazza Duomo, where the Cathedral and the Baptistery are located, built in the late 12th century. The Baptistery was designed by Benedetto Antelami and built of pink marble "Verona Rose". Marble changes color depending on how the sun shines on it. This is one of the most recognized medieval buildings in Italy. The frescos inside the building are very exciting, like the relief sculptures carved on the stone walls.

Parma University was founded one of the first in Italy. In its current form, the oldest educational institution exists since 1601. In addition, the Parma Botanical Garden, which was founded in 1770, is very popular.

We recommend that you go to the opera in the splendid Teatro Regio theater, famous for its passionate and zealous local opera fans. Buy tickets must be in advance, as the opera is extremely popular in Parma. During the whole of October, Verdi's festival is held every year in honor of all the revered (by the way, born in Parma) Giuseppe Verdi

Palazzo della Pilotta, built in 1583, you can visit the Academy of Fine Arts, where the works of Parma school artists are exhibited , as well as the Archaeological Museum, the National Gallery, the Farnese Theater and the Bodoni Museum

The Palace of the Duke, erected in 1561 for Duke Ottavio Farnese in the former castle of Sforza, was expanded in the 17-18th centuries. Here is the Palazzo Eucherio Sanvitale with interesting 16th-century scenery and the Parmigianino fresco.

Also worth a visit is the Palazzo del Comune in 1627, Palazzo del Governatore of the 13th century, the Bishop's Palace 1055 and the Old Hospital (Ospedale Vecchio), built in 1250 and reconstructed during the Renaissance. The latter now houses the State Archives and the Public Library.
