Galungan, which takes place in July, is the main festival of the Balinese calendar pawukon. It is dedicated to the triumph of virtue (dharma) over evil (adharma). According to legend, all Balinese gods descend from heaven to take part in the festival, the center of which is the Myungan Barong dance.
Tanor-barongs wear a big doll head of a creature that looks like a hairy lion, representing the good. There are various forms of dance, but the most sacred and dangerous depicts the struggle of the Barong against the forces of evil in the person of the queen of the demons leyakov Rangda. She is trying to hit him with crises (special knives), and he shows that there is no power in them and puts her into a trance state.
During the celebration of Galungan, barong dancers run from temple to temple, showing spontaneous performances. The festival ends with a major day - Kuningan, when offerings are offered to the temple to bid farewell to spirits and ancestors.
