"Radiant City" - this is not a utopian place, as it may seem from the title, but quite a real attraction of Marseille. Behind such a brilliant slogan in the literal sense, there is ... a usual apartment house. True, you did not see such a high-rise building anywhere!
This futuristic building was built in the middle of the last century by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Before the author (since these were difficult post-war years), the goal was set: in a short time to build a roomy and comfortable house. I must admit that Le Corbusier coped with her.
"Radiant City", as the architect called his creation, gave a roof over his head to almost two thousand inhabitants of Marseilles. In the 18-storey house there are almost 340 apartments, and the rooms have more than 20 (!) Different layouts. Moreover, in the "Radiant City" building there are shops, a kindergarten, a library, a cafe, and on the roof there is a terrace with a swimming pool. That would be such convenience and yes in our "sockets", is not it ?! By the way, in 2002, this ultramodern, as it is now called, "Radiant City" celebrated its 50th anniversary ...
"Root" tenants of the "Radiant City" can still be found today, having come here on an excursion. By the way, tourists at the entrance are not questioned meticulous concierge, and they meet quite friendly guards who explain what parts of the house can be inspected. And you can walk around the hall, shops and climb to the roof of the house. Visits to the apartments of the "Radiant City" (not residential) are possible with an excursion organized and coordinated in the Marseilles Tourism Committee.
To the "Radiant City" of Marseille you can get on 21 and 22-m buses. The stop will be called "Le Corbusier."
