South Gate in Seoul

Five years after the monstrous fire, South Korea presented Monday its public historic monument whose restoration works cost the state treasury 20 million EUR. The southern gate (Sungnyemun), dating from the 14th century, is a national treasure and a symbol of the country. Located in the heart of Seoul, they once served as a southern entrance to the city. However, a wooden monument of Korean architecture that survived both the Japanese occupation and the Korean War almost completely burned down in February 2008. "Using traditional materials and methods, we have done our best to restore the southern gate to their original appearance" - shared Kang Kyung-Hwan, a leading restorer. The 2008 fire deeply shocked all Koreans, raising many questions about the level of safety of national monuments. The sixty-year-old arsonist was sentenced to 10 years in prison the same year
