How to get there
There are two railway stations in Gatchina: Gatchina-Baltiyskaya and Gatchina-Varshavskaya. Electric trains to both depart from the Baltic Station of St. Petersburg (en route about an hour). Less trains are assigned to Gatchina-Baltic and they go longer (about an hour and a quarter), but the Baltic station is only a few hundred meters from the entrance to the palace.
Buses No. 100 and No. 18 depart from the Moskovskaya metro station.

Entertainment, excursions and the sights of Gatchina
The palace and park ensemble of Gatchina consists of four parks: Dvortsovy, Zverinec, Priorytsky and Sylvia - with a system of lakes, two palaces and many pavilions. The parks are very poorly maintained, a lot of garbage, and most of the buildings are in ruins. The entrance to the parks is free.
The main palace was built in 1766-1781 by the design of Antonio Rinaldi, after the war it was badly damaged and not all rooms have been restored to date. The suite of ceremonial halls of the 18th century is open, including an outstanding collection of weapons. From the palace to the shore of the Silver Lake is an underground passage, culminating in the Echo grotto. Between the palace and the railway there is a monumental and half-abandoned building of the palace stables (1798-1800), in which the naval archive is now located.
In Prioratsky park there is the second sight of Gatchina parks - Priory Palace (1798-1799). He was destined for the Prior of the Order of Malta expelled from France, the great master of which in 1798 Paul was elected. The palace is unique in that it is earthy (the motivation for such a choice was the elimination of the danger of a fire). From the compressed earth built walls, fence and surrounding buildings. Only the retaining wall and the tower are stone.
