The history of the Mikhailovsky Palace begins in 1798. This year Prince Michael was born - the son of Emperor Paul I. Immediately after the baby was born, the father decided that in the future he would build a magnificent palace for his child. Especially for this purpose, he ordered every year to postpone large sums of money. Alas, Paul I never saw the Mikhailovsky Palace. During the coup, the emperor was killed. Nevertheless, his will was fulfilled. When Mikhail turned 21, Emperor Alexander I ordered to build a mansion for him.
The architect of the new complex was Carl Rossi, who started work on the project as early as 1817 . At first it was assumed that the Mikhailovsky Palace would be erected on the site of some other building . But then this proposal was considered unprofitable, and the estate was decided to be built in the wasteland in the city center . It is interesting that all the works were conducted in the summer, and also in warm weather in the spring and autumn in order that the building was solid and reliable . In total for the construction of Mikhailovsky vratsa took 7.6 million rubles . Most of this money was spent on decorating the interior of the mansion .

Interior decoration of the house of Mikhail Pavlovich was amazing with its magnificence. The entrance staircase was decorated with two sculptures of lions, which were cast specially for this manor. The statues are a replica of ancient sculptures found during excavations in Rome in the 16th century. The house was used for the first time wallpaper. The floor of the building was covered with a parquet of precious and very expensive wood species.
Prince Mikhail Pavlovich together with his wife became hospitable hosts of the Mikhailovsky Palace and very often arranged balls and all sorts of tricks . It is interesting that Mikhail Pavlovich did not forget his old friends with whom he once served . Many of them occupied certain positions in his home . After the death of the prince, the widow Elena Pavlovna continued to conduct business properly . Mikhailovsky Palace became famous for the whole of Pe erburg as a cultural center . frequent guests here were Tyutchev, Pushkin, Zhukovsky, Briullov, Aivazovsky and many other creative people .
Later the house was owned by the children of Mikhail Pavlovich . At the end of the 19th century the Mikhailovsky Palace became a profitable house, the building gradually fell into decay . However, in 1895 Nicholas II organized the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III and transferred the Mikhailovsky Palace to this organization . Such a decision of the king accepted due to the fact that the Hermitage has already had a huge collection of exhibits . However, almost all the values of the museum were of foreign origin, and for the traditional Russian works remained free only one room . Emperor found it necessary to make a separate museum specially for the work of our masters . The museum was opened in 1898 . it is worth noting that his collection is constantly updated, and soon had to build another building, which would contain all the works of art . in 1914 the project of Leonty Benoit began to build a new building . However, due to the First World War, work was suspended . After a while the body build, and he received the name of its creator - Benoit . Today the State Russian Museum is known worldwide . Probably every tourist arrivals Petersburg, seeks to visit the exposition of this museum .
