The history of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic began two hundred years ago, when the first Philharmonic Society in Europe was organized in the city on the Neva. It was here that the world premiere of Beethoven's "Solemn Mass" took place.
In the middle of the XIX century the Philharmonic Society acquired its premises, built according to the project of the famous architects Jaco and Rossi. The hall with excellent acoustics was immediately appreciated by musicians and metropolitan music lovers and quickly became the center of the cultural and social life of St. Petersburg. After a hundred years of the philharmonic society became closely within one hall (with a capacity of 1500 people) and in 1949 in the house of Enegelgardt on Nevsky Prospekt the Small Hall of the Philharmonic Society was opened
Heroic page ist Rhee Philharmonic associated with the blockade of Leningrad. The seventh symphony of Dmitry Shostakovich was performed in August 1942 for the residents of besieged Leningrad within the walls of the Philharmonic. City legend says that the musicians of the orchestra spent the whole day before the premiere in search of potatoes. They wanted that, despite the hardships of the war and the blockade, the conductor appeared before the public in a starched orderly.
Today the St. Petersburg Philharmonic is considered one of the most prestigious concert venues in the world. To visit the concerts of the Philharmonic Hall, to enjoy magnificent acoustics and to assess the interior of the hall, you should go by metro to Nevsky Prospekt station and walk along Mikhailovskaya Street to the Arts Square, on the left side of Mikhailovskaya Street there is an entrance to the Philharmonic. The Small Philharmonic Hall is located directly near the Gostiny Dvor metro station.
