Konka (horse-drawn railway) was the first public transport of St. Petersburg. The first cargo crew was launched in 1862 from Nikolaevskaya Square to the Exchange Line of Vasilievsky Island. Later they began to transport people. Ondoetazhny or two-story wooden car stretched on rails by horses. One-story car pulled one horse, two-story - two horses. A couple of horses were harnessed to climb the hill.
The horse-drawn railway was very popular among the residents of St. Petersburg. Only in two years - 1863-1864, 1, 5 million people were transported. In 1876 the "Joint-stock company of horse-railroads" appeared. By the beginning of the 20th century, the total length of all the horse-drawn routes was almost 150 kilometers.
