Monte Argentario is a commune or, in other words, a municipality, and also a peninsula belonging to the province of Grosseto in the Italian region of Tuscany, located 150 km south of Florence.
The peninsula is connected to the land by three elongated sandy Shoals that form two closed lagoons: Laguna di Ponente - west of the middle sandy mound and Laguna di Levante - to the east. Cape Argentario is home to two small port towns: the "northern" Porto Santo Stefano and the southern port of Porto Ercole

How to get here
The nearest airports to Monte Argentario are in Pisa and in Rome, where regular airplanes of known airlines fly, including Aeroflot and AlItalia. There is also a train station in Orbetello Scalo and several bus stations
Take the Pisa-Rome train and leave at the station closest to Argentario, Orbetello (15-20 minutes by car). The station has intercity buses Rama buses (tel .: 0564 86 79 29), which will take you either to Porto Santo Stefano or Porte Ercole; the journey time is about 20 minutes, the fare is about 2 EUR. The same buses run to Grosseto (3, 5 EUR, en route 1 hour, 4 departures per day).
Traveling by car from the north - from Pisa - takes only 2, 5 hours. It is also possible to get there in one and a half hours and from the south direction - from the Roman airport Fiumicino, breaking the distance of 150 km.
Climate
The climate in Monte Argentario is especially pleasant. Even in the heat, when a warm wind from North Africa blows "sirocco", high humidity and clouds cover the peninsula for a day or two before the "mistral" again brings the sun and a cool breeze.
The winters in Monte Argentario are usually very mild, as the peninsula is protected by hills and is still in the south. Therefore it is good to come here outside the season, even on Easter.
Entertainment, excursions and attractions of Monte Argentario
At an altitude of 635 m is the highest point of the peninsula - the peak of Punta Telegrafo (Punta Telegrafo). The terrain here is mostly stony. On this mountain in the medieval fortress there is a man's monastery, where a restaurant with Tuscan cuisine is opened. From the top of Punta-Telegrapho, you can see wonderful views of the Tuscan archipelago and yachts floating in the distance.
Above the Cape Argentario there are three fortresses: Fortezza Spagnola - in Porto Santo Stefano, as well as Forte Filippo and Forte Stella - in Porto Ercole. These fortifications, which are part of a chain of defensive towers and fortresses, were built by the Spanish in the middle of the 16th century to control the Tyrrhenian Sea. By the way, the biggest and most famous is Fortezza Spagnola, where you can see interesting exhibitions of shipbuilding and shipwrecks
Events
The most important day in the calendar of the town of Porto Santo Stefano is considered August 3, when the remains of St. Stephen were found, dropped into the sea by local fishermen. During the holiday, a crowd of dressed in 17th-century suits passes through the whole city. Following the people follows a string of local boats illuminated with colored lights
August 15 there are the famous rowing competitions Palio Marinaro between the different areas of Porto Santo Stefano. This competition is held in honor of the boat "tartan", used to transport coal and wood. It was these vessels that once saved the city from Saracen pirates
On the last Sunday in August, the citizens of Porto Santo Stefano celebrate the City Day every year. On this day in the night sky fireworks are lit, folk festivities and wine tasting are held.
