The Basilica of Santa Giustina is one of the most revered churches, not only in Padua, but throughout Italy. Suffice it to say that several saints are buried under the arches of the church. In the basilica are the relics of one of the four evangelists - Luke. Thousands of pilgrims come here to worship the shrine

In the Basilica of Santa Giustina there are the relics of Evangelist Luke

Also in Santa Giustine there is the relics of Saint Prodcius. And under the altar is the burial of the relics of Saint Justina (Justina) of Padua. Actually, originally the church was built on the grave of the Holy Great Martyr

The first building appeared in the 16th century, and the modern basilica began to be built in 1530. The church was rebuilt several times, the work was dragged on for almost a hundred years. This could not but reflect on the external appearance of the basilica: its main style is the Renaissance, but in the architecture of the building it is easy to find details with Byzantine influence.

Incredible, but outwardly the basilica is somewhat reminiscent of a mosque. Perhaps such a surprising similarity of the Catholic Church is attached to a large number of domes and a tall bell tower that rises like a minaret.

The church bells are worthy of special mention. On the bell tower of the Basilica of Santa Giustina there are seven rare bells with an unusually clear sound. The last bell was cast only in 1957

The length of the building is 122 m and the width is 82 m. Therefore, from the top of the basil of Santa Giustina resembles a huge Latin cross.

The interior decoration, altar and choirs was painted in the 16th century by the artist Paolo Veronese. In the basilica is stored his painting "The Martyrdom of Saint Justin". According to legend, she suffered a lot during the persecution of Christians, she was baptized by the first Bishop of Padua Proskodim. And during the reign of the Roman Emperor Maximian, the saint died - she was hacked with a sword.

St. Justine is depicted with a sword that pierces her chest. And above the martyr is a palm branch. The painting is on the central altar, under which the holy relics rest.

Right after the completion of the construction, the Basilica of Santa Giustina was placed at the disposal of the Benedictines. The church was closed in 1810 by Napoleon and reopened only a hundred years later, in 1919

After the Second World War, a public library was made in the Santa Giustina Basilica.

The Basilica of Santa Giustina is very easy to find. The architectural monument is located in the south-eastern part of Prato della Valle, which is the center of the city.
