Well in India

Well Chand Baori - this is one of the unique archaeological sites of India, preserved from ancient times. This well is in shape an inverted cone, its depth is about 30 m. The main feature of Chand Baori is the stepped walls, along which you can go down to the reservoir with water.

The exact date of the well construction is unknown: some historians attribute it to 9-11 century (the reign of the Nikumbha dynasty), others believe that it was built in 600 AD. A well is meant for storing rainwater

Despite the fact that the water from the well does not meet sanitary standards and is recognized as unfit for drinking and bathing, hundreds of pilgrims daily descend to the bottom of the well to perform a ritual bathing ceremony. Only after the believers wash their hands and feet in the well water, they allow themselves to go to pray to the temple of the goddess of joy and happiness of Harshat Mata. By the way, to get to the water, you need to go down the stepped terraces, there are about 3500 steps here. This is quite dangerous, since the descent is not equipped with handrails.
