From January 13 to March 6 in the Dominican Republic is a traditional carnival - one of the favorite national holidays and the expression of the soul of the Dominican people. At the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, the central theme of the 2011 carnival was the theme of environmental protection.

The main national carnival procession will traditionally take place on the famous Malecon waterfront in Santo Domingo on Sunday 6 March. The king and the queen of the procession, who are crowned at a special ceremony on 11 February, have already been chosen. Colorful carts will take place along the streets of the city, at which dance and theatrical troupes depicting different characters will perform, and after the carnival celebrations the authors of the most interesting tuples and carnival images will be awarded with prizes

The history of the Dominican carnival began in the colonial period - the first carnival processions allowed the Dominicans in the festive fun to express the joy of liberation from the sad events of the national history . By the 20th century all the cities had their own carnival traditions ΠΈΠΈ . The oldest and most popular of provincial carnivals takes place in the city of La Vega (website): in 2006 it was ranked by UNESCO to the four best world carnivals . Provincial Carnival in Santiago de los Caballeros stands out historically as a social substitute: the rich are having fun in private clubs, the poor are in the city streets, and the traditional characters are also representatives of different classes . In Monte Cristi the central carnival characters are the bulls, and the highlight of the carnival in San Pedro de Macoris is merry tan descendants of black immigrants called "guloyas" .
