Add a review about Mall Street in London

Mall, that is The Mall - a small street, but it is known, without exaggeration, not to all of London, but to the whole of Britain. The reason is simple: this is the main venue for most royal ceremonies

History of appearance

Once there were fields for the game called the Pell-Mell (she looked like a croquet, she was played on a field covered with a lawn) . This game gave the name to two streets - it's Mall and parallel to her Pall Mall . The playing fields were not far from the royal palaces - Whitehall and St. James , on the one hand they were joined by queens and they quickly turned into a walking area for the aristocracy . Then the fields disappeared, there appeared beautiful green boulevards, and then Buckingham Palace was rebuilt and turned into the main royal residence - it happened under Queen Victoria .

Meaning

From now on, Mall is the front entrance to the royal residence, the main ceremonial street of the country. All royal departures begin there, most of the street events associated with the royal family and the crown are held.

Mall connects Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square. This is both a very grand street decorated with British flags on both sides (the reason is simple: this is the main place for most royal ceremonies), and very pleasant, because it goes along the park and is planted with large old trees. On one side is, as before, St. James Park, on the other - a few old buildings, then Green Park. There are flowers blooming in the park, along the buildings on the other side, too.

To go see Buckingham Palace is best on it - so the famous architect designed the palace, and he knew what he was doing: with Mell the wonderful view of the palace and the monument to the queen opens up Victoria is in front of him

There are a lot of events here: the London Marathon starts, concerts are held on the days of royal celebrations (the most different are the Queen's birthday, for example.)

This is also worth going if you are interested in the royal family. When the Queen goes on business, she usually leaves the city from here.

Attractions

Also along the Mall are the Institute of Contemporary Art (the gallery is open to visitors) and several remarkable historic buildings: Marlborough- House, Clarence House and Lancaster House. From Mall, it goes to the old royal St. James Palace. All this can be seen.

Mell periodically overlaps - for events, in some cases for pedestrians it is open at the same time, in some not.

Charing-Cross metro station is best for visiting.
