Total production of tea in Sri Lanka in February 2010 was 23,508,011 kilograms compared to 12,881,691 kilograms last year. Figures clearly show us a growth of 82.5%. The successful development of the tea industry is undoubtedly associated with an increase in demand for low-caliber Ceylon tea in the Middle East and Russia
However, it should be noted that the figures for tea production in 2009 were very low, to which there are several reasons, including untimely application of fertilizers and unfavorable weather conditions. Therefore, the level of tea production in 2009 fell by 44% compared to 2008.
Producers expect the continued growth in production in March and April, as traditionally January and February are considered not the best months for the tea industry. Concerning the production of orthodox teas and green tea, the growth in February 2010 was about 54% and 45%, respectively. In the first two months of 2010, the growth of production of orthodox tea was 58%, and green tea 64% respectively.
Now Sri Lanka is developing a strategy to enter new potential sales markets to increase sales and strengthen its positions globally. @
