As the chairman of the Port Authority of Sri Lanka Priatt Bandu Vikram said, an artificial island of 48 hectares will be located in close proximity to Hambantota, one of the largest ports in the Indian Ocean. Mr. Vikrama also specified that the island will be intended for visiting only by foreigners, and local residents will need special passes.
The engineer who developed the project of the Hambantota Port reported in an interview to the Business Times that the construction of the island became part of the second phase of the project to expand the nearby urban area, which is currently being implemented. According to preliminary calculations, its final implementation will take place not earlier than the beginning of 2016.
