Ceylon cinnamon will get GI registration (geographical indicator) at the end of February 2011 of the year. The Spice Board and the Export Committee of Sri Lanka have chosen 4 logos for Ceylon cinnamon. In addition, it is also planned to obtain one logo registered by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Sri Lanka is famous throughout the world for its cinnamon. In the Middle Ages, the smell of cinnamon growing in Colombo's cinnamon gardens could be felt already from the ship entering the harbor. In Latin, which has long been used by botanists to designate plants, cinnamon is called "synnamon zeylanicum" or, more simply, Ceylon cinnamon. Sri Lanka now provides about 60% of the world's volume of this miracle spice

Cinnamon is a tree growing to 10-15 meters in height, which can be from 30 to 50 centimeters in girth . However, the tree is not allowed to grow large and from time to time it is cut so that new shoots grow out of the trunk, forming a shrub . Shoots are cut off when they become about 1-2 meters long and thick with a finger . Cut off the shoots bark cut into strips . Drying on the sun turns the bark into sticks, which are sold in the same form or crushed into powder . From bark and from l Cinnamon stems are made with oil using a distillation process that is added to balsams and perfumes .

In addition to cinnamon, Sri Lanka has already registered Ceylon tea . Registration by geographic indicator is carried out by the national intellectual property organization . It is also expected registration of Ceylon tea in off-shore zones and recognition of Ceylon tea as registered intellectual property for all who pack tea outside the island . Such registration takes place for the first time and pursues its purpose to avoid forgery of Ceylon tea, mixing Ceylon tea with other types of cheaper tea, which leads to a decrease in the quality of the product . Sri Lanka is famous for its tea and the goal of the Sri Lanka tea council is to preserve and strengthen the position of Ceylon tea all over the world .
