Another significant event on April 28, 2010 was the 125th anniversary of the Buddhist flag. On April 28, 1885, a solemn lifting of the flag took place on the day of Adi Vesak Poyo, which also fell on April 28, at the Deepadututaramaya Temple in Cottagene. The five colors on the flag symbolize the aura emanating from the Buddha shining light.
The horizontal lines symbolize:
Blue (Nile) - kindness, calmness, compassion.
Yellow (Pete) is the middle way, that is, abstinence from luxury and poverty.
Red (Lohita) - success, wisdom, virtue, luck and dignity.
White (Obata) - cleanliness and release.
Orange (Mandjesta) is the quintessence of Buddhism in wisdom, staunchness and dignity
The vertical line symbolizes the truth, combining all the above five colors
The great role in spreading this Buddhist flag across the planet was played by Sir Henry Olcott and Anagarika Dharmapala. He was first introduced to the Japanese Emperor and adopted in Japan in 1989. Subsequently, it was also adopted in other Buddhist countries of Asia: Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, etc. The flag was approved by the Second World Buddhist Conference, held in Japan on May 25, 1950 as a single Buddhist symbol.
