According to the ten-year plan of the country's development until 2016, it is planned to create 10 national botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. Within the framework of this project, 15 special vegetation zones will be created, which can be found on the island. It is also planned to grow endemic plants that are very important and place them in a protected area of parks. Botanical gardens will be established in Hambantota, Avissavela and other regions
The main goal of this large-scale project is to preserve the diversity of the plant world of Sri Lanka for future generations. The second goal of the project is the dissemination of information and technology research in the field of floristry and plant industry. And the third task pursued by Sri Lanka is the development of research on the diversity of the island's flora.
