UNESCO announced on Tuesday awarding the status of a "biosphere reserve" to three Spanish territories. Thus, Spain becomes the second country in the world in terms of the number of specially protected natural areas (45 classified reserves), behind only the US (47 classified reserves).
New biosphere reserves were chosen in view of the implementation of innovative pilot approaches on their territories natural resources and biodiversity conservation in the long term. These include: the royal reserve San ildefonso-El Espinar near Segovia, the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo in Galicia and the land of the Ebro in Catalonia
At the moment, the World Network of "Biosphere Reserves" has 621 natural territories in 117 countries . In Russia, they include 41 nature reserves
