Vice-president of the Russian Railways Mikhail Akulov said that the price of a railway ticket for reserved seats for passengers who do not have the right to benefits may increase by almost 60% in 2013.
The reason for such a rise in prices was the Ministry of Finance's offer to subsidize the reserved seats from the new year only for young people under 23 and for pensioners. RZhD, in turn, asks to increase subsidies instead of reducing them, explaining this not only by forced tariff increases, but also by the fact that prices will increase following an outflow of passengers.
Mr. Akulov commented on the initiative of the Ministry of Finance as follows: "If the formula applied in air transport, when for passengers under 23 and after 60 years a discount is given from the current tariff, in the case of rail transport this will have the opposite effect. Having played in aviation to reduce the tariff, we, applying this, almost 70% of the consumers of transportations in the regulated segment will load an additional load by almost 60%. "
