How to get

You can get from Rome by bus or train. The distance of 24 kilometers is overcome very quickly. If you want to go by train, then you need to recover to one of the railway stations - Termini or the Tiburin's Old. If you want to get on the bus, you have to go to the bus station of Tiburtina, it is located near the railway station of the Old Tiburin - try not to mix it up!

Along the way, one tricky moment awaits - the station "Bani Tivoli". Do not give in to the provocation and go to the station "Tivoli", without the "Bath" (yes, I understand, the Russian tourist even in Italy from the bath to refuse quite difficult, but try). Then ask the locals where the city center is located (in Italian it sounds like Centro Citta) and head off in the specified direction. Seven minutes of walking - and voila! - you are in the center.

Arriving in Tivoli from Rome, it makes no sense to rent a hotel room: after wandering around in the city a day, you can return to the Italian penins in the evening.

The paragraph of history

Originally the city was called Tibur and was founded in the 13th century . It was at the intersection of all the roads of Italy to the east from Rome . Whose possessions did not belong only to the long-suffering Tibur! He was in the power of the ancient peoples: the Siculians, Pelasgians, Etruscans and Latins . Eventually, became a resort town for wealthy inhabitants of Rome, and its name was transformed to Tiburi, and then to Tivoli . Later the city passed from hand to hand : from the Byzantines to the Goths, from the ready to the Pope . From the 12th to the 15th century the city was even considered relatively independent . In the 17th century, Tivoli was in Austria's possession for some time . Finally, he joined Italy, where he is now happily and lives .

Villas Tivoli

Villa d'Este

This villa is a prototype of Versailles Peterhof and go, so do not be surprised if it gets you something vaguely resemble. D'Este was erected by Cardinal Ippolit d'Este in the 16th century.

The Cardinal was a notable connoisseur of antiquities. As a true intellectual and a man of honor, he replenished his collection by borrowing badly lying things. At the moment, the entire collection of D'Este seems to have evaporated, almost nothing remained in the villa. However, she already has something to surprise her: curly bushes, magnificent fountains, skilful statues and the architecture of the villa itself will easily make her open with the amazement of even an experienced tourist.

Villa Adriana

This architectural structure is located 6 km from Tivoli (Via di Villa Adriana). You can get there by bus ("bus and Adrian"). The villa was a personal estate of the Roman emperor Hadrian and was built between 118 and 134 years. ad. Now, unfortunately, only the ruins remained from the former luxury of the villa, but it was once a richest building in which a large collection of ancient works was collected.

The canopy "Kanop" attracts attention, surrounded by graceful statues of all stripes. It was in him that the lover of Adrian Antin, who was considered the most handsome man of the empire, drowned once.

"Discobol" of the British Museum was found, incidentally, at this villa.

Opening Hours: November-January: Mon-Sun 9.00- 17.00; February: Mon-Sun 9 am-6 pm; March, October: Mon-Sun 9.00-18.30; April, September: Mon-Sun 9.00-19.00; May-August: Mon-Sun 9.00-19.30, the ticket office closes an hour and a half earlier. The inspection of Villa Adriana will take at least 3 hours. The audio guide in English (€ 4) will make the walk more meaningful.

Villa Gregoriana

Villa Gregorian, or the Gregorian villa (this is whom anyone likes best) is on the other end of Tivoli. Going to Gregorian, prepare for the most spectacular spectacle in your life. On the territory of the villa you will be met by giant grottos, hundred-meter waterfalls, ancient temples, dark caves and mountain paths. However, there is no point in talking about this, it should be seen.

Villa d'Este

Old Town of Tivoli

In addition to the villas, there are several other tourist attractions in Tivoli

Rocca Pia Fortress

A majestic and monolithic structure, which, perhaps, one of its kind takes tourists to the Middle Ages. Built in 1461, the fortress managed to be a prison, and even a museum.

Church of Santa Maria Maggiore

The temple is next to Villa d'Este. The church was built at the behest of Pope Simplicius in the 12th century. Mention is worthy of the altar of the temple of Galvani, the massive Gothic doors of the work of Angelo da Tivoli and the chapel

Church of St. Sylvester

Built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. Inside the tourists there are the most beautiful frescoes of the 12th century, the apse with the image of the legend of Constantine and Saint Sylvester and the triumphal arch.

St. Lorenzo Cathedral

One of the oldest buildings of Tivoli, built in the fifth century. True, in 1635 it was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style. Inside you can see the Savior's triptych, created in the 12th century

Sibyla Restaurant

A unique place with nearly 400 years of history. At one time, members of the Romanov family, Goethe, Gogol, Bryullov, King of Prussia Friedrich-Wilhelm III, Prince Jerome Napoleon and many others dined here. The restaurant is notable for the interior preserved since the 18th century and the delicious local cuisine. Photo Tivoli (6)
